Life is made up of chapters, and one of the biggest transitions many of us face is when our children leave home. Suddenly, we find ourselves with an “empty” nest—often a larger one than we truly need. This stage can feel overwhelming, filled with emotion and change… but it can also be incredibly exciting.

Through this blog, I want to share real-life tips and practical tools to help you navigate this next chapter with confidence. Most importantly, I hope to inspire you, re-energize you, and help you look ahead with a sense of excitement.

I don’t know about you, but for me, it felt like I turned around and—just like that—my home was quiet. It took a few months to adjust to dinners alone, less activity, and yes… a lot less mess (which, I have to admit, wasn’t a bad thing!).

Once I settled into that new rhythm, I began to think about what I wanted next. Where did I want to live? How did I want my home to feel? Being a “list girl,” I grabbed some paper and started writing down every idea—practical, dreamy, and even a little crazy.
And that’s where your downsizing journey begins.

My Top 10 Tips for Downsizing with Style:

– Take inventory of what you own. Choose the pieces you truly love and use regularly.

– Let go with intention. Sell, donate, or gift items that no longer serve you. Remember—the memories stay with you, not the item.

– Think scale. Smaller spaces need appropriately scaled furniture—especially sofas and chairs.

– Maximize storage. Bookcases, storage ottomans, and multifunctional pieces are your best friends.

– Create a floor plan. Knowing where things will go helps avoid costly mistakes.

– Float your furniture. Don’t feel the need to push everything against walls—let pieces “live” in the space.

– Design for multi-purpose living. A room can be both a reading nook and a music space, just plan it that way.

– Reimagine your pieces. A dresser can become a TV stand. Stay open-minded!

– Bring your personality forward. Use your favourite pieces—especially those tucked away.

– Refresh your look. Consider a new colour palette or theme. Gather inspiration, explore ideas—and remember: if you love it, it works.

Tips for Buying New Furniture:
Shopping for furniture can feel overwhelming—it’s easy to go in circles not knowing what will work.
Here’s how to simplify the process:
Go in with a plan. Know what pieces you’re looking for.
Always measure—both in-store and at home.
Test for comfort. Sit, relax, and make sure it feels right for you.

Mark It Out:
This is one of my favourite (and most important) design tools.
Before moving anything in, grab painter’s tape and map out your furniture directly on the floor using your measurements. Step back and take it all in:
Does the layout feel balanced?
Is there enough space to move comfortably?
Does anything feel crowded?
This technique also works beautifully for planning features like a wall-mounted TV or fireplace.

Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, your goal is simple:
Create a space that makes you smile. A space you love. A space you can’t wait to come home to.
I’ll leave you with one of my favourite quotes from Nate Berkus:
“Your home should tell the story of who you are and be a collection of what you love.”
Happy Downsizing,
Sue
