As I was thinking about this month’s design inspiration, I had an idea: why not send a little bit of PEI design to my friends in the Vankleek Hill area?

Living on Prince Edward Island, we’re surrounded by beautiful beaches, driftwood-lined shores, and endless coastal inspiration. The good news is that you don’t need to live beside the ocean to enjoy that relaxed beach-house feeling. With a few simple decorating touches, you can bring the beach vibe right into your own home.

Start with a Coastal Colour Palette:
As the weather warms up, our homes naturally begin to feel lighter and airier. A beach-inspired room starts with soft, calming colours.
Think:
– Crisp whites
– Shades of blue
– Soft greys
– Touches of turquoise or teal
– Accents of navy
These colours instantly create a fresh and relaxing atmosphere that feels perfect for summer.

Let One Special Piece Inspire the Room:
Every room needs a starting point.
For my guest room, the inspiration came from a beach sign I found while thrifting. That one simple find helped guide all of my decorating decisions and brought the entire room together.
Whether it’s a piece of artwork, a favourite thrifted treasure, or a meaningful accessory, choosing one focal point makes decorating much easier.

Shop Your Home First:
One of my favourite decorating tips is to “shop” your own home before buying anything new.
I went through my linen closet and discovered bedding that layered beautifully together. To my surprise, the colours were already perfect for the beach theme.
Next, I gathered items I already owned:
– Navy cushions
– A decorative cushion featuring trees
– Thrifted nesting tables
– A lamp that complemented the room perfectly
Sometimes the best decorating finds are already hiding in your home.
Before heading to the store, be sure to check closets, storage rooms, the basement, and even the garage. You never know what treasures you might uncover.

Bring in Natural Coastal Elements:
Accessories are what truly bring a beach-inspired room to life.
Of course, driftwood is a must.
I keep a basket beside the bed filled with driftwood collected during walks along the shore. Every time I find another interesting piece, I simply add it to the collection.

On the dresser, I created a small coastal vignette using:
– Driftwood pieces
– A wooden ship
– A decorative house
– A lantern
– A few favourite accessories
– A snake plant for a touch of greenery
These natural elements instantly add warmth, texture, and personality.

Add Personal Touches:
Some of my favourite pieces in the room have special meaning.
A feather macramé wall hanging, gifted by a friend, finally found its perfect home. I also displayed a piece of feather and driftwood art that I created several years ago. Sitting on the windowsill, it feels as though it was made specifically for this room.
Personal touches are what transform a decorated room into a meaningful space.

Don’t Forget the Floor!
When decorating, we often focus on furniture and accessories, but the floor deserves attention too.
A natural jute mat or circular rug is the perfect finishing touch for a beach-themed room. It adds texture, warmth, and a casual coastal feel that ties everything together.

Why I Love the Beach Theme:
As I stepped back to admire the finished room, I was amazed at how quickly everything came together—and how naturally all the pieces worked together.
What I love most about this style is its versatility. Whether you live in a condo, a house, or a cottage, a beach-inspired room can work beautifully.
The soft colours, natural textures, and collected treasures create a sense of calm that welcomes you home after a busy day.
And isn’t that exactly what we want our homes to do?
