Have you ever heard a designer say, “This room needs more layers and textures” and wondered, What does that actually mean?
You’re not alone! These terms can sound a little intimidating, but they’re really quite simple. Layers and textures are what keep a room from feeling flat, cold or unfinished. By mixing fabrics, woods, metals, patterns and natural elements, you create a space with warmth, depth and personality.
And this is where I like to have a little fun!
Start With the Big Pieces
Begin with the larger elements in your room.
Rugs: Ground hardwood or tile floors with a woven jute, wool or textured area rug.
Furniture: Look for upholstery with texture—linen, tweed, boucle or leather can all add interest.
Walls: Wood paneling, exposed stone, beams or textured wallpaper can add another layer without adding clutter.
Mix Hard With Soft
One of my favourite design tricks is mixing opposites.
Pair a sleek glass or metal coffee table with a rustic wooden tray. Add a chunky knit throw to a leather chair. Place smooth ceramic accessories on a weathered wood shelf.
It’s the contrast that creates interest.
Layer Your Textiles
Textiles are one of the easiest ways to add softness and personality.
Frame windows with fabric drapery, mix different sizes and fabrics when choosing pillows, and combine quilts, throws, linen and cotton for a cozy, collected look.
And don’t forget about thrifted and vintage pieces! An old quilt, woven basket or weathered wood accessory can add character that you simply can’t buy in a matching furniture set.
Tactile vs. Visual Texture
There are two basic types of texture.
Tactile texture is what you can actually feel—rough stone, distressed wood, soft
velvet, chunky wool or smooth marble.
Visual texture is what the eye sees. Think wallpaper, patterns, wood grain, matte finishes, shiny metals and mirrors.
This is where I really like to have fun! A glossy mirror can bounce light around a room, while a matte finish creates a softer, more relaxed feeling. Patterns can add another layer without taking up any physical space.
My Design Tip
If a room feels a little “blah,” don’t automatically assume you need to buy more furniture or accessories. Look at what you already have.
Could you add a textured throw? Bring in a woven basket? Mix in some wood? Change your pillows? Add a plant or a mirror?
Sometimes it’s those small changes that make the biggest difference.
Remember: Mix it up! Combine smooth with rough, soft with hard, old with new, and patterned with plain.
There are no decorating police!
Have fun with your layers and textures—and make your home uniquely YOU!
