Have you ever wondered what designers mean when they talk about curating a home?
To me, curating means thoughtfully choosing, editing, and arranging the things you love so your home tells your story. It’s not about creating a room that looks like a catalogue or following every new trend. Instead, it’s about creating a home that feels collected, personal and uniquely you.
And the best part? You don’t need a big budget to do it!
Start by Editing
Before adding anything new, take a good look at what you already have.
Remove the things you no longer love, need or use. Give your room some breathing space and allow your favourite pieces to stand out.
And don’t forget to shop your own home! You may have treasures tucked away in a closet, basement or another room that could have a whole new life somewhere else.
Create a Feeling
Rather than choosing a strict decorating style, think about how you want your home to feel.
Do you want it to feel cozy, relaxed, welcoming, collected or energetic?
Look for common threads in the things you love — perhaps certain colours, textures, woods or patterns. These will help create a sense of connection throughout your home.
Mix Old and New
This is where the fun begins!
I love combining vintage and modern pieces. An antique chair beside a contemporary sofa, a vintage lamp on a modern table, or a beautiful old piece of artwork mixed with newer accessories can give a room personality.
Thrift stores, flea markets, estate sales, local shops and Facebook Marketplace can be wonderful places to find those special pieces that make a home feel collected rather than decorated all at once.
Layer in Texture
Think about mixing different materials — wood, woven baskets, linen, glass, metal, ceramics and soft fabrics.
Layers and textures add warmth and depth and prevent a room from feeling flat or cold.
Style with Intention
You don’t need something on every surface.
Less really can be more.
Leave some empty space so your favourite treasures have room to shine. When styling shelves and tables, try combining different heights and shapes. A vase, a stack of books and a small bowl can create a simple but interesting arrangement.
And remember — every piece doesn’t have to match. It just needs to feel like it belongs.
Take Your Time
A truly curated home doesn’t happen overnight.
In fact, I think some of the most beautiful homes evolve slowly. They are filled with pieces collected over time — things that have a story, bring back a memory, or simply make you smile.
Instead of buying something just to fill an empty spot, wait until you find the right piece.
Can Anyone Curate Their Home?
Absolutely!
It doesn’t matter if you live in a large home, a small apartment, or have a very limited decorating budget.
Curating your home really comes down to three things:
Patience — Don’t feel the need to buy everything at once.
Editing — Be willing to let go of things that no longer work for you.
Intention — Before you buy something, ask yourself, “Do I really love this, or am I simply buying it to fill a space?”
Some of my favourite finds have been thrifted, repurposed or pieces I already owned but looked at in a completely different way.
Your home should be a reflection of your life, your personality and the things you love.
So take your time, have fun, shop your own home, hunt for those special treasures — and let your home tell your story.
I hope this inspires and helps you along your own curating journey!
